Finding Fresh Chord Progressions When Stuck

Finding Fresh Chord Progressions When Stuck

Before changing methods, composer Taras Bondar noticed disturbing patterns in his work. Every fourth song used I-V-vi-IV progressions. His fingers automatically moved to familiar shapes on the keyboard.

Client feedback confirmed the problem. Three different projects in January 2024 received notes about songs sounding too similar harmonically.

The instrument rotation system

Taras implemented mandatory instrument switching for chord exploration. Monday sessions used only guitar. Wednesday work happened on a basic MIDI controller with unfamiliar patches loaded.

Friday writing occurred on a borrowed mandolin despite limited proficiency. The goal was discomfort, not competence.

Results over four months

Between February and May 2024, the composer created nineteen distinct progressions that broke his usual patterns. Guitar work produced suspended chords he rarely touched on piano.

The MIDI controller with orchestral sounds led to voice-leading choices impossible with two hands on keys. Mandolin limitations forced simpler structures that paradoxically felt more sophisticated.

Changes in the final output

Client revisions decreased significantly. The March project received approval on the second draft instead of the typical fifth round. May work included a progression using modal interchange that emerged from guitar exploration.

Not every experiment succeeded. Roughly 40% of new progressions proved unusable, but the remaining options provided genuine alternatives. The composer now maintains a rotation schedule even when comfortable patterns would work.

How Sessions Are Organized

Group sessions run twice weekly with up to eight participants. Each session lasts ninety minutes and covers specific production techniques. Individual lessons offer flexible scheduling and targeted skill development based on your current knowledge level.

Technical setup

Equipment Requirements

Stable internet connection with minimum 10 Mbps upload speed. Digital audio workstation installed on your computer. MIDI controller optional but recommended for hands-on practice during live demonstrations.

Program spans twelve weeks. First four weeks cover sound design fundamentals. Weeks five through eight focus on arrangement and composition. Final four weeks address mixing and mastering techniques.
Live feedback during sessions. Screen sharing for detailed technique demonstration. Private messaging for technical questions between sessions. Monthly one-on-one progress reviews included with enrollment.
Weekly production assignments reviewed by instructors. Peer feedback sessions during group classes. Final project completed independently and presented to the group. No grading system, focus on practical skill acquisition.
All group sessions recorded and available for seven days. Individual lessons not recorded to maintain privacy. Session materials and project files shared via cloud storage after each class.
