Live Music Production Fundamentals
What this program covers
Live music production requires combining technical proficiency with creative adaptability. This program walks through the essential components — hardware integration, signal routing, performance preparation, and troubleshooting under pressure. Whether you're preparing for live gigs or streaming performances, the curriculum addresses both the fundamentals and the edge cases that separate functional setups from reliable ones.
We focus on real scenarios: venue acoustics, equipment failures, time constraints, and working with musicians who have varying levels of technical understanding. Each module builds on the previous one, moving from controlled studio settings to unpredictable live environments.
Program structure and stages
Program structure
- Week 1-2: Audio routing, interface configuration, and DAW performance setup
- Week 3-4: MIDI mapping, controller integration, and parameter control
- Week 5-6: Live mixing techniques, monitor management, and gain structure
- Week 7-8: Building performance sets, scene organization, and arrangement flow
- Week 9-10: Troubleshooting, backup systems, and handling technical failures
- Week 11-12: Timed performance exercises with live feedback and critique
All sessions include hands-on practice with real equipment and software used in professional settings.
Most bedroom producers panic when they first step into a live setting. The workflow flips completely, and suddenly you are making decisions in seconds instead of hours.
This program focuses on the technical foundation you need before touching any equipment. You will learn signal routing, gain staging, and how to build a stable live rig that does not crash mid-performance.
What the technical side actually involves
We start with understanding audio interfaces, MIDI controllers, and how to structure Ableton Live or similar DAWs for performance rather than studio work. You will work with hardware controllers, map parameters, and set up reliable backup systems.
The second half covers live mixing fundamentals. We work through monitor management, dealing with latency issues, and making quick EQ decisions while performing.
How the practice sessions work
Each week includes timed exercises where you manipulate tracks under pressure, simulating real performance conditions. Yaryna Kolodiy, who has been running live electronic sets across Europe since 2016, leads these sessions and gives feedback on your setup choices.
You will also troubleshoot common technical failures, from audio dropouts to MIDI disconnections, learning to recover without stopping the music.
By the end, you will have a working live set, understand your signal chain completely, and know how to adapt when things go wrong on stage.

How sessions are structured
Group sessions
Weekly group sessions follow a consistent format: technical demonstration, hands-on practice with provided equipment, group troubleshooting exercises, and peer feedback. Each session addresses one specific production challenge — from routing multi-track stems to managing latency in hybrid setups. Participants work through the same problem simultaneously, then compare approaches. Sessions last 90 minutes and accommodate up to 8 participants per cohort.
Individual sessions
Private sessions are tailored to your specific equipment, workflow, and goals. Whether you're preparing for a particular venue, troubleshooting a recurring issue, or optimizing your personal setup, these one-on-one sessions address what group formats can't. Sessions are scheduled flexibly, last 60 minutes, and include post-session notes with recommendations and resources specific to your situation.
Practice assignments
Between sessions, you'll complete focused exercises designed to build muscle memory and confidence. These aren't theoretical tasks — they're simulations of real production scenarios with time constraints and intentional complications. You'll record your process, note what went wrong, and bring questions to the next session. Most assignments take 2-3 hours and require access to a basic audio interface and DAW.
